Whether trio or quartet, these two worlds are interconnected by a common love of music, by the highest possible level of virtuosity and by the klezmer tradition.

One of the characteristics of the Feidman Quartet is the omnipresence of the Argentinean tango, the very music with which Giora Feidman grew up in Buenos Aires. With his quartet, he ties in with experiences of his early childhood and surrounds himself with three very talented South American musicians, with whom he has enthused audiences around the entire world.

Clarinet and bandoneon in a musical duel

Alongside the spirited guitarist, Aquiles Baez, and the virtuoso on the double bass, Ken Filiano, Raul Jaurena also joins in the act. The musician, born in Uruguay and today living in New York, is currently one of the world’s leading masters of the bandoneon. As a pupil of the legendary tango grand master, Astor Piazzolla, with whom Jaurena has also performed together, he made the “Tango Nuevo” to one of the major purposes of his life. Even when he was still a young man, he was already playing at “Milongas” in the dance cafés of his home town. Later he was to become a member and/or founder of a wide variety of formations and enjoyed great successes with his group, “New York Tango Trio”. The luring sounds of his bandoneon have even been heard in the White House.

Similar to the clarinet, the bandoneon is not only a very popular instrument in South America, but also one of vast expressiveness. When these instruments join hands at a concert of the masterful quartet, then the sparks of inspiration fly so that it is a joy to behold.

Klezmer meets Piazzolla, South America meets Eastern Europe and the fruits of the meetings are bitter-sweet and full of power. One can become addicted to the experience – and that is why the audiences normally never allow the four musicians to leave the stage until many, many encores have been demanded and many standing ovations have been given.
